Hurricane Laura Response

On August 27th, Hurricane Laura hit Southwest Louisiana as a Very Strong Category 4 Hurricane with Winds of 150 MPH! This caused more destruction than any other storm to strike that area.  This region needs our prayers and needs our response.  The Lake Charles area was one of the most negatively affected areas.  Lake Charles is also in great need of volunteer support.  In the Lake Charles area: huge trees are down everywhere.  Buildings are damaged and devastated.  Electricity is out for the next several weeks.  In many neighborhoods, the water has been contaminated or is simply not available. Gasoline is in short supply in Southwest Louisiana.   Businesses are mostly closed.

How, When, & Where to Best Volunteer:

Volunteers may gather at Sales Street Baptist Church at 1611 W. Sales Road, Lake Charles, Louisiana 70605 (7:30 AM and/or 12:30 PM) to work with the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Team.  REQUIRED SAFETY ORIENTATIONS occur twice daily, on-site at 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM  After two weeks these operations will occur 6 days per week on Mondays – Saturdays.

Samaritan’s Purse will then supply the training, tools, water, and locations to serve.  Volunteers will need to supply their own transportation, lunch, gloves, eyewear, masks, and wear long pants and sturdy boots.  Samaritan’s Purse requires volunteers to be 14+ years of age. Volunteers 14-15 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian present with them.  Volunteers will need to have a full tank of gasoline before entering Louisiana.  Volunteers will need to be physically able to endure multiple hours of strenuous activity in a hot, humid, outdoor environment.  The scope of work includes heavy limb removal, putting tarps on structures, partial muck outs of interior walls, listening to and offering prayer to affected homeowners.  There is no electricity or air-conditioning in most places.  Volunteers will need to return to their homes on the same day of serving – as overnight accommodations are not available.

There will be Tallowood members volunteering with the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Team in Lake Charles, LA on Saturday, Sept. 5th and Monday, Sept. 7th.  Most of these members will arrive early, all using their own transportation, for the required 12:30 PM. safety orientation.  Some will arrive for the 7:30 AM safety orientation.  Also individuals may volunteer with the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Team which is staging at Sales Street Baptist Church at 1611 W. Sales Road, Lake Charles, Louisiana 70605, on an ongoing basis – as their schedule permits.  Anyone whom has had any known exposure to COVID-19 within the last 3 weeks, and/or possible symptom(s) of COVID-19, is asked to refrain from volunteering.  If more information is needed, please call (337) 930-2693 or visit: www.spvolunteer.org/project-response/291 .
