How to Become a Christian

We are so glad you clicked on this link. Please read below to discover how to make the best decision of your life.

God created you and wants to have a personal relationship with you now on earth and eternally in heaven. The Bible says in the book of John, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Mankind, however, cannot get to God on his own. God is holy and pure. God did create man in His image. He loves you, but one day you and I sinned and a gap developed between God and us. That separation is a result of sin. The Bible says in the book of Romans that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

God would have been perfectly justified to leave matters there, with all human beings under his judgment, but he didn't. God instead set in motion his plan to save humanity from sin, judgment and the curse of death. How did God do this? He sent his Son as a man who would bear the penalty for our sin and die in our place. The Bible teaches that “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.”

The bad news is that we are separated from God. The good news is that God has a plan to bring us back into relationship with him. In the book of Ephesians it says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one may boast.”

Many people think that they can do “good works” to get into heaven. But the Bible says that it is not through our actions, or “works,” that we are made right, but through God’s grace and gift to us. That “gift” is Jesus, his Son. God sent his Son Jesus who lived a perfect life, to die on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” In the book of Revelation Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

We must turn to God, which entails turning back from sin. If we repent of (decide to forsake and turn from) our sin and trust in Jesus, we will be saved from the punishment for our sins. Turning to God necessarily implies our turning away from sin. We cannot start to pursue God and sin at the same time.

The Bible says in the book of John, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

New life found in Jesus Christ begins by confessing that you are a sinner, that you need a Savior, that you believe that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to save you, and that you put your trust in Christ as your only Savior.

If this explanation makes sense and you are ready to receive Christ as your Savior and Lord, then pray this prayer to God right now, wherever you are.

"God, I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that you sent your Son, Jesus, to die on a cross to pay the price of my sins. Today, I turn from my sinful nature and ask your forgiveness. I trust in Jesus as Savior and will follow him as the Lord of my life. Thank you for this gift and for hearing my prayer offered in the name of Jesus. Amen."

If you prayed this prayer for the first time just now, please tell someone about your decision. Christianity cannot be lived alone. Share your new faith with someone you trust, and with a church where you can grow in your commitment to Christ.
